¡Merengue! Visual Rhythms @ Louisiana Art & Science Museum

With bursts of color and energy emanating from the canvas, you can almost hear the vibrant song and dance depicted in the 47 pieces on display in the latest LASM exhibition, ¡Merengue! Visual Rhythms. A celebration of the Dominican Republic's classic form of dance, 27 artists tell its story through paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture and video. The exhibit runs through March 16. Admission is $6 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.  >>More
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars @ Manship Theatre

Rebel forces may have forced them out of Sierra Leone, but these fleeing musicians used this experience to spread a message of hope and peace. Reuben Koroma met many of his future band mates in a refugee camp in Guinea. After the war ended he united his new friends with his old band The Emperors, and Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars was born. It's a fusion of traditional West African music with reggae and traditional folk sounds and fans can't help but get caught up in the music. Tickets are $20-$40. Show starts at 8 p.m.  >>More

Carnival season is drawing to a close as Fat Tuesday rapidly approaches, but there is still fun to be had. Two of Baton Rouge's favorite parades, as voted by 225 readers in the 2006 "Best Of" issue, also roll this weekend. Rolling through the historic Southdowns neighborhood the Krewe of Southdowns celebrate its 21st annual parade with "Wonders of the World" at 7 p.m. Friday. And the pink flamingoes around town can only mean one thing: Spanish Town Mardi Gras. Rolling through downtown on Groundhog Day, Saturday, Feb. 2 at noon. The krewes will display their interpretations of this year's theme, "Flamingeaux Phil Predicts."  >>More
